Frequently Asked
Questions
There are many questions surrounding surrogacy and at The Surrogacy Center, we are here to answer them for you. We are available by phone or e-mail to answer the many questions you may have. The following are some questions that we are often asked.
Why should I use an agency?
Whether you are an intended parent, or a gestational carrier, the importance of using an agency is critical because of the legal issues surrounding the surrogacy process. At The Surrogacy Center, we provide you with the legal expertise through The Law Center for Children and Families. And just as important, we have professional, experienced staff to help you through the process. We provide relationship management and coordination of all aspects of the process so you can enjoy the experience.
Do the Carriers have medical insurance?
In our program, our Carriers are required to have some form of medical insurance, although it may not cover a surrogacy pregnancy. Our attorneys review the insurance policy to determine exactly what is covered and what is excluded. This is done before any match is made between intended parents and carriers so all parties know what to expect with respect to insurance. If for some reason, surrogacy related expenses are excluded in a carrier’s insurance plan, we have access to plans that offer alternatives.
How is maternity/paternity established, and when?
In Wisconsin, intended parents are designated guardians until the birth of their child, at which time full legal parentage is established.
With what organizations are you affiliated?
The Surrogacy Center is a member of RESOLVE (a national infertility organization), and The American Society of Reproductive Medicine (ASRM).
What is the time line for the process - from the inception to when the surrogate is actually pregnant?
The time line for the process varies. Some carriers and intended parents are matched immediately while others have to wait. At The Surrogacy Center, we don’t just match you with anyone. We make careful considerations with respect to your views on selective reduction and abortion, and also personality issues. We want this to be a successful experience for you – both personally and professionally. Overall, program participants can expect, on average, for the entire process to take approximately 15 to 18 months from the beginning (applying to our program) to the start of the next journey which is having a baby!
